Booking permits too late
Panna has a daily cap on permits per zone. In peak season (October to March), morning slots fill up 7 to 14 days in advance. Weekends and school holidays go faster.
Walk-in permits exist but they are limited. If you have fixed travel dates, book the same day you fix them.
What to do: Book through the MP Forest Department’s official ecotourism portal as soon as your dates are set. Do not wait until you reach Khajuraho or Panna town.
Booking without knowing which zone to choose
Panna has three main entry gates: Madla, Hinauta, and Jhinna. Most visitors pick whichever appears first in search results.
- Madla covers the core area along the Ken River. Produces the most tiger and crocodile sightings.
- Hinauta is the main entry for visitors coming from Khajuraho. Good access, well-traveled route.
- Jhinna gets less traffic. Better for birding and quieter drives.
One thing that catches people out: buffer zone permits are cheaper and easier to get, but they are not the same as core zone permits. Buffer zones have lower wildlife density. If your goal is tiger sightings, book a core zone.
Getting the safari timings wrong
Timings change by season. A lot of old blog posts show outdated times, and visitors show up at the wrong hour.
Approximate timings (confirm when booking):
| Season | Morning Slot | Evening Slot |
|---|---|---|
| Winter (Oct to Feb) | 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM | 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM |
| Summer (Mar to Jun) | 5:30 AM to 9:30 AM | 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM |
Booking through unverified agents
There are many travel sites and WhatsApp agents that claim to book Panna permits. Some are legitimate. Others overcharge or send unverified confirmation PDFs that do not hold at the gate.
Watch for these signs:
- No official MP government booking reference number
- Full cash payment with no traceable receipt
- Claims of “guaranteed tiger sighting zones”
The only official booking system is the MP Forest Department ecotourism portal. Any legitimate operator books through it and gives you a reference number you can verify yourself.

Picking the wrong vehicle type
Both jeeps and canters are permitted in Panna.
| Vehicle Type | Jeep | Canter |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 6 people | 16 to 20 people |
| Route Flexibility | Higher | Fixed route |
| Cost per Seat | Higher | Lower |
Arriving during monsoon closure
Panna closes every year from roughly July 1 to September 30. The exact dates shift slightly each year.
Every season, visitors arrive in August expecting the park to be open. It is not.
Check the park’s operational dates on the MP Forest Department website before booking flights or hotels.
Missing ID at the gate
Every adult (18 and above) needs a valid government-issued photo ID in original. Not a phone screenshot, not a photocopy.
Accepted documents: Aadhaar card, Voter ID, Passport, Driving License.
Foreign nationals must carry a passport. If one person in your group forgets their ID, the whole group may be turned away.
Staying too far from the reserve
Khajuraho is the nearest town with flights and proper hotels, about 25 km from Madla gate. That is a 40 to 50 minute drive depending on road conditions.
For a 6:30 AM morning safari, you need to leave by 5:30 AM. It works, but it adds pressure. Visitors who book hotels in central Khajuraho sometimes misjudge the early morning logistics.
Better option: forest resorts or eco-lodges within 5 to 10 km of Madla gate. Shorter drive, no traffic, and you arrive on time without stress.
Not knowing full-day safaris exist
Panna offers full-day safari permits. You stay inside the reserve through the afternoon rather than exiting at mid-morning.
Most visitors do not know this option exists. Two half-day safaris on separate days costs more time and gives less consistent coverage than one full-day permit in a good zone.
Ask about full-day availability when booking. It is not always listed as a default option on booking platforms.
Treating guides as interchangeable
The quality difference between Panna naturalists is real. A good guide tracks individual tiger movement, knows which waterholes are active by season, and reads animal behavior before deciding which route to take.
Before confirming with any operator, ask:
- How many years have they worked specifically in Panna?
- Do they track current tiger territory in your zone?
Two jeeps can enter the same zone on the same morning. One spots a tiger, the other does not. The route call the guide makes is usually why.
Pre-booking checklist

- Zone selected: core vs. buffer, Madla vs. Hinauta vs. Jhinna
- Safari timing correct for your travel season
- Original government ID ready for every adult in the group
- Park is open on your dates (not monsoon closure period)
- Hotel within reasonable distance of your entry gate
- Jeep or canter chosen based on group size
- Arrival at gate planned at least 15 minutes before your slot
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I book a Panna safari?
Peak season (October to March): book 10 to 14 days ahead. Weekends and school holidays: 3 weeks is safer. Off-season (April to June): 3 to 5 days is usually enough.
Which zone gives the best tiger sighting chances?
Madla core zone, on routes along the Ken River, has historically produced the most sightings. Panna’s tiger population recovered strongly after the reintroduction program. The reserve has 50-plus tigers as of the most recent census.
Can I book a same-day safari in Panna?
Sometimes, if cancellations open up slots. It is not reliable enough to plan around.
Is the safari worth visiting without a tiger sighting?
The Ken River route has good numbers of gharial, mugger crocodile, vultures, and sloth bear. Birdlife is strong year round. Tiger sighting odds in Madla core during peak season are reasonable in morning slots, not guaranteed.
What is the difference between core zone and buffer zone permits?
Core zone covers the protected interior where tiger density is highest. Buffer zone is the outer area with more human activity and lower wildlife density. Buffer permits cost less but give a noticeably different experience.
